The human brain is part of the central nervous system. It is located in the head inside of the skull. The brain is covered with protective matter called the meninges, which has three parts. The dura mater, which is the outer layer, is the toughest and thickest layer that connects to the bones of the skull. The middle layer, called the arachnoid has it name due to the web-like tissue it is composed of. The pia matter, which is the innermost layer, lays closely to the brain and is thin and vascular.
