On November 12, 2001 another fatal event occurred within the aviation industry. Only this time, it occurred in our own back yard of New York City. At about 09:16 am, American Airlines Flight 587 in an Airbus A300-605R aircraft, crashed into a residential area of Belle Harbor, New York. Let us examine the summary of events that the NTSB determined led to the crash in order to identify the probable causes.
Flight 587 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight to Las Americas International Airport, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with 2 flight crewmembers, 7 flight attendants, and 251 passengers aboard the airplane. About five minutes to the tragedy, American Flight 587 was instructed to position and hold from Kennedy Tower. Then around 30 seconds later, Tower issued a wake turbulence advisory is then given to flight 587 prior to their take off clearance to advise them of the departed Japan Air Lines 747 has taken off before them.
