“The Last of the Mohicans” is set in 1757, the third year of war between England and France for the possession of American land. The center of the story is the most notorious event of the French and Indian War; the so-called 'massacre' of British troops, women and children by General Montcalm's Indian allies after the British surrender of Fort William Henry to the French in August of 1757. The film is well-known for its epic battle sequences, but if we look past the artistic appeal of these scenes, we can see a genuine effort to accurately recreate the conflict between France and England for control of the America. Naturally, some characters and events are embellished to increase the entertainment value, but there is still a remarkable amount of historical accuracy throughout the film.
The film correctly portrays the Iroquois as ferocious warriors who practiced torture and covered their skins with war paint. The gathering of Indians in the temporary military camps......
