This passage, an excerpt from “I Have a Dream”, a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was King’s mission to pose a purpose, a method and a result. He successfully did so, using literary tools such as allusions, metaphors, similes, imagery, alliteration and repetition. By placing his methods, his people and participants onto a pedestal, he was able to ultimately turn his dream into a reality.
Initially, King discusses his non-violent approach to revolution. Some saw this as weak, as ineffective. However, King stated that his act was on “the high plane of dignity and discipline” and that by taking non-violent action, his people would reach “majestic heights”. By giving his technique a greater moral value than any other, he persuaded thousands to stand by him. Furthermore, King degrades the violent method of action: “We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.” “Degenerate” is certainly a strong and useful word, as people......
