Dear family,

I'm still alive and unwounded but I have experienced awful situations. I was buried 4 times and was knocked down by a hand grenade, but I'm safe. Thank god I am still alive. Most of my fellows are dead or wounded, Tom is dead, disrupted by a hand grenade, Joe dead, Kyle wounded...I can just give you a short description of the situation. Out of my last letter I wrote to you, you know that I went through a lot. On the 6th September our company was based in the support line and only had to bring food and ammunitions to the front line. On September 7th we had to go to the front line and on the 8th from 9am until 1am we were hit by heavy artillery fire. During 1pm and 7pm the most disgusting happened what humans can experience. Our trenches were no more longer trenches, they were holes caused by mine fire. I lied in such an hole with 2 other men, how I escaped I don't know, and I myself......
