E-mail Monitoring in the Workplace

The internet has provided businesses worldwide with an extraordinary array of new opportunities, however, it does provide its equal share of challenges and risks. Misuse of the internet and e-mail has impacted employee productivity and in some cases resulted in many legal suits for organizations involved. As a result, companies worldwide are increasingly making use of electronic monitoring software.
Miriam Schulman addresses the issue of employee electronic monitoring in her article “Little Brother is Watching.” She explained that the 1986 Electronic Communications Act exempts service providers (including employers who provide internet access) from its provisions, which prohibit unauthorized interception of electronic communications.
