Of mice and Men is by far a book of pessimism. Although there are glimmers of brief optimism these are nearly almost smashed by Steinbeck's cruel, corrupt and chaotic picture of 1930's America.
Candy is doubtless a pessimistic character. He feels lucky in the sense that the other men on the ranch tolerate him despite his physical disability. He also finds himself fortunate that he hasn't been kicked off the ranch by the boss. Likewise at times he can be convinced that everyone is out to overpower him and make his life worse. Furthermore he radiates pessimism by his negative attitude concerning his dog. Carlson overpowers him, the rest of the guys in the bunk house do nothing to help Candy what so ever and Candy's dog is shot. This shows how his defenceless and can’t stand up for himself. After this whilst talking to George he says “When I get canned here I wisht somebody’d would just shoot me.” This comment shows how he feels his future will be grim, if not......
