The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA, was passed by Congress in 1996. Before HIPPA, an individual’s right to access his/her own medical records were not guaranteed by federal law. Now, everyone has the right to see, copy, and request to amend their own. HIPPA gives each person the right to access and request their medical records. It is always a good idea to request your medical records in writing, you then have a record of the data, such as when and what you’ve requested. The provider’s privacy policy should tell you how to request your records. HIPPA does not allow you to have your original records, but copies of the original. The doctor office may charge a fee for the copies, but HIPPA has set a limit on the fee. They also have 30 days to provide access to the patient’s medical records.
