Homeschooling, the education of children at home, is done typically by parents or professional tutors, rather than in a public or private school. In many places homeschooling is a legal option for parents who wish to provide their children with a different learning environment than exists in nearby schools. In some places, an approved curriculum is legally required if children are to be home-schooled.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to teaching children at home, and all factors should be weighed carefully before making the decision. One advantage is educational freedom. Most homeschooled students have the choice to study and learn what they want, when they want, for as long as they want. This is not to say that all the basics aren't covered, but those basics may be covered at age six for one child, and at age ten for another, depending on ability, maturity, and interest levels.
