Responsible scientific conduct is much more complex than simply adhering to the standard codes of scholarly conduct and ensuring all data is truthful. Scientific responsibility arises because of the role scientists play in the community and the power this gives them. Great obligations come with such power (Kitcher, 2004). Scientists have the obligation to take into consideration the outcomes of their research, and to ensure that these outcomes will promote the greater good of society. These scientists also have an obligation to put an end to that research in a case with negative outcomes. In the following paper the obligation to reflect on the potentially harmful outcomes of the research will be discussed in relation to Kitcher’s well-ordered science theory, followed by an analysis of Kantian ethics in relation to the scientists’ obligations to put an end to, and even fight against research which has negative outcomes on society.
