OZONE LAYER ITS DEPLETION AND THE EFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
The Earth's atmosphere is divided into several distinct layers. The lowest region, the troposphere, extends from the Earth's surface up to about 15 kilometers in altitude. The troposphere is where all weather takes place. It is the region of rising and falling packets of air. The air pressure at the top of the troposphere is only 10% of that at sea level (0.1 atmospheres). There is a thin buffer zone between the troposphere and the next layer called the tropopause. Virtually all human activities occur in the troposphere.
The next layer, the stratosphere, continues from 15 km to about 50 km. Most commercial airline traffic occurs in the lower part of the stratosphere. The stratosphere gets warmer at higher altitudes. In fact, this warming is caused by ozone absorbing ultraviolet radiation. Warm air remains in the upper stratosphere, and cool air remains lower, so there is much less vertical mixing in this......
