Now it is not perceived as just a problem affecting homosexuals, but all Americans. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It leaves the immune system weak and unable to fight sickness and diseases. AIDS is caused by something called HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s transmitted through bodily fluids, unsanitary needles, sex, and blood transfusions. Once a person with HIV gets to the point where they have AIDS, they become incurable.
AIDS was introduced to the United States around 1970. The first serious cases were among drug users and gay men. About sixty percent of men diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in the United States were exposed to the virus through male to male contact.
