From the beginning of mankind, societies have tried to keep the peace and to find appropriate punishment for those who did not comply with the law. The institutions of incarceration were founded in the early 19th century because the crime control was not effective. Prisons were thought to be places where the punishment was designed to reform the individual. The first Canadian prisons have experienced a very early dishonorable, but improvements have emerged gradually over time, leading to more humane conditions.
For many centuries before 1800, justice was an exemplary solution to punish the criminals. The aim was to strengthen the dramatic and sensational public punishment to deter criminals from committing offenses. The idea to build an institution of incarceration was to find a place for improvement and reform moral and intellectual criminals.
