Government control over basic rights is a serious issue. There are two perspectives that seem to summarize an ongoing debate. The critical perspective takes the position that government seizes power over lives of U.S. citizens in a deliberate fashion. While others contend that the hegemonic role of government procures total control over individual choices and limits basic freedoms. Further, the premise of this perspective contends that the state is inherently slanted to favoritism toward the ruling class interests. On the other hand, conservative or mainstream thinkers contend that government acts in favor of the general needs within the population. The basic function of protection or concern for the welfare of the populace falls under the purview of government functionality. Such individuals might well contend that a delicate balance between the fundamental needs of the masses are served by the ongoing role of government.
