Although Obama succeeds in getting a firm, trustworthy tone in his speech and thus convinces the audience that he is the candidate it should vote for, further analysis of the speech reveals that his claims are simply arguments without much basis, which frequently distracts the audience from trusting him totally. Obama’s keyword “promise” throughout the speech upholds Obama’s credibility as he discusses what he will do once he becomes the president. In the first page, he asserts that he “stands there” because he thinks he could keep the promise of American dream appealing to the ethos. This also appeals to almost every American in the country who want success, whether he is an immigrant or a citizen with a deep-rooted American ancestry. It’s the word “promise” that people use to keep themselves from sounding like a total hypocrite, and Obama’s frequent reference to American dream as “promise” does just that.
