“The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” These words were spoken in a eulogy to a dog in the Missouri Supreme court by George Graham Vest in 1870. Vest was the lawyer for a man who was suing his neighbor for damages over the fatal shooting of his favorite hunting dog, Old Drum. This trial was largest case of any sort in this part of the country in quite some time. The following provides a closer look at the dog whose death made him famous and the trial that coined the term-Man’s Best Friend (Baines, 2004). It was a cool autumn evening in late October, 1869 when Charles Burden heard a gun shot in the distance. The gunshot sounded like it came from his neighbor’s property which was about a mile south of his own farm.
