Electroconvulsive Therapy Electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT, is a therapy that generates electric currents to anesthetized patients inside the brain (Swartz, 2005). It involves inducing a seizure in a patient by passing electricity through their brain. The idea of treating humans with ECT was come up with it the 1930s by Ugo Cerletti, an Italian psychiatrist. He came up with the idea of ECT being applied to humans after watching the act of hogs in slaughter houses being electrocuted into unconsciousness. After that he also thought it could apply to humans as a treatment for mental disorders (Taylor, 2007). ECT can be used in people with a variety of symptoms. They can range from delusions, hallucinations, or even suicidal thoughts.
