Joy Gerardi HU 101 “I Hope My Daddy Dies, Mister”: A Human Service Students Reaction A few things that surprised me about this story, besides it being 33 years old, was that even back then, when the majority of child abuse cases were unreported that there was such a disproportion of cases to workers. I also was and wasn’t surprised by the lack of required education and experience that was required of the caseworkers. Although I did want to tell Mr. Herrmann to shut up about taking so many antacids, I respect any social worker who can maintain composure in these rage inducing situations (field and work related), and do their job as efficiently as possible. I am empathetic to the fact that Herrmannhad to deal with demanding hours, department bureaucracy, a wretch of a secretary, and seeing things happen to children on a daily basis that would make even the most genuine optimist’s spirit break. Although he mentions briefly that he is married, he doesn’t mention anything......
