Calculating the Density of Liquids and Solids

The purpose of this lab is to determine the density of 4 different materials. Density is the amount of mass an object has in relation to the amount of space it takes up. We will be using graduated cylinders, and electronic balance, and other lab materials in order to figure out the different densities. After completing this lab we will be able to find the density of 2 liquids (water and rubbing alcohol) and a solid (block of wood).

Materials:
• Goggles
• Water
• Another liquid (Rubbing Alcohol)
• A block of wood
• A rock
• 2 10 mL graduated cylinders
• 100 mL graduated cylinder
• Ruler
• Dropper pipettes
• Electronic balance

Formula:
Density=mass/volume

Densities:

Water-
M= 7.09g
V= 7.25mL
D=m/v
D= 7.09g/7.25mL
D= .98g/mL

Rubbing Alcohol-
M= 5.57g
V=7.58mL
D=m/v
D= 5.57g/7.58mL
D= .73g/mL
