The “Era of Good Feelings” is a phrase that described a time period in American political history in which partisan bitterness reduced. A phrase that applied to President James Monroe’s two administrations in office, 1817-1825. This phrase was first used in a Boston newspaper, the phrase was coined by Benjamin Russell, in the Columbian Centinel, on July 12, 1817, following the good-will visit to Boston of President James Monroe. It described the glowing nonpartisan welcome that greeted Monroe on his five-day visit to the Federalist city.

Due to the aftermath of the War of 1812, the Federalists were eliminated as a national political force. So that means that the Republican party reigned unchallenged during Monroe’s presidency, on a national level. It was obvious why it was called the “Era of Good Feelings”, because there was one political party, and no one attacked the president. The nation was united under the Democratic-Republican party.
