Thrice’s sonnets come from the alchemy index which is composed of four concept cd’s that are meant to take on the characteristics of the classical elements Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. The sonnets are written in classical English structure and according to Dustin Kensrue the lead singer and songwriter of Thrice “Each sonnet is written from the point of view of the personified element, speaking to mankind, and lamenting our various failings”(vagrant).

The sonnet titled child of dust is from the point of view of the earth element. In this sonnet Mr. Kensrue establishes the elements ethos with lines such as “Dear prodigal you are my son and I Supplied you not your spirit, but your shape.” Meaning that we are children of the earth and are bodies are composed of the elements of the earth this establishes the earths credibility because we owe our existence to the earth.
