California gets $100 million in taxes from medical marijuana sales alone.
A report done by Professor Jeffrey A. Miron of Harvard University shows that if the government were to set up a system of taxation and regulation instead of prohibition they would save $7.7 billion. The state and local government would collect $5.3 billion of the savings and $2.2 billion would go to the federal government. (“The Budgetary Implications of Marijuana Prohibition”).
Selling marijuana like cigarettes- the government can regulate the potency and purity of the marijuana and sell it for a reasonable price. Similar to alcohol and tobacco, vendors would be forbidden to sell to those under 21, and the requisite health warnings would be prominently placed on each unit sold.
