Beauty is defined as being a characteristic of a person that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning or satisfaction. An “ideal” beauty is an entity which is admired, or possesses features widely attributed to beauty in a particular culture. If beauty is such a good quality to obtain, why does it seem like our culture is only focused on the negative aspects that people strive to have? The quote, “it is better to be beautiful than good, but…it is better to be good than to be ugly”, said by Oscar Wilde, defines this confrontation with beauty; but to really get a variety of views on this subject of the body, people should take the time to read some of the essays in Body and Culture written by Gregory T.
