In order to win votes, candidates campaign in states with the hope of persuading citizens and delegates to vote in their favor. Each state schedules their primaries; the earliest date allotted by the Democratic Party was February 5th (http://senatesite.com). According to the Democratic Party, any state that decided to “jump the gun” and schedule their primaries before February 5th would lose all of their delegate votes. In other words, any state that doesn’t “play by the rules” loses its power in selecting the President nominee. However, the penalty according the Republican Party is far less severe; they count half of the delegate votes. Some States decided to “buck the system” and take the penalty by pushing up their primaries to an earlier date than “allowed.” States feel that they have a greater affect on deciding the president nominee if they have their primaries earlier.
