Professor Holli VahSeliskar Kaplan University December 13, 2008 The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) showed the 2007 violent crime numbers as 1.4 million offenses. These numbers indicated a decrease of 1.4 percent in violent crimes, when compared with the 2006 figures. Violent crime rates also showed a decline, in all categories; forcible rapes decreased 2.5 percent while all other violent crimes (murder, non-negligent manslaughter, robbery, aggravated assault) also declined from 2006 to 2007. Murders were down 1.3 percent, while motor vehicle theft decreased 8.1 percent. Burglary and larceny-thefts had also dropped slightly. Property crimes decreased 2.1 percent in 2007, continuing its decrease for the fifth straight year. The URC used data that represented 94.6 percent of the nation’s population, indicating a decrease in non-negligent manslaughter, which dropped 0.6 percent.
