Authors from the time of slavery, all the way through reconstruction and onwards, have all taken a different view of the institution of slavery. Some have attempted to portray the institution as it really was where as some have endeavored to portray slavery as a positive thing for the slaves. These different views have lead to vastly different literature on the topic. In “Free Joe”, Joel Chandler Harris attempts to convince the reader that black people were happier enslaved than free. Joe was better off, more comfortable, and happier as a slave than in his life as a free man; he knew where he stood in the social order and understood his place in life.
