The Civil Rights Movement was a political movement for equality before the law occurring approximately between 1960 and 1980. It was accompanied by much civil unrest and popular rebellion. The process was long and violent in many places, and most of these movements did not achieve or fully achieve their objectives. However, the African Americans proposed their new standards of living through non-violent force and civil disobedience which helped them achieve their goal.
Four events sparked the Civil Rights movement. The first major milestone was the murder of Emmett Till. Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy in Money, Mississippi. He went into a local store to buy some candy, and as he was leaving he said “Bye baby” to Carolyn Bryant, the wife of the store owner.
