In the Scarlet Letter, the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, utilizes various writing techniques and styles to convey the many themes exemplified by not only the characters in the novel but by the various symbols and locations. One theme which can be manifested through two of the main characters of the story is that of sin, punishment, and redemption. The central action of the story revolves around sin, the type of sin which some critics consider to be “comparable to Adam and Eve and their human sin” (“Literary”, 1) and those whom it affects. The characters in the novel who best exemplify the theme of sin, punishment, and redemption are Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale, who engage in a love affair, considered socially and morally unacceptable for their time.
