Doctor Jonas Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who were not formally educated but wanted their children to succeed. Salk was the first member in his family to go to college. His ambition was to study law but he was later intrigued in science. He entered City College of New York and studied law but eventually went on to medical science. When he was in medical School at New York University, he spent a year researching influenza. He was eager to find a cure for the virus that was recently discovered, the flu. He succeeded in this attempt and later, it became the basis of his research on poliomyelitis, or polio. In 1947, he then agreed to attend the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He devoted himself to work on developing a vaccine against polio, while working there, for the next 8 years. In 1955 Salk was hailed a miracle worker because he finally discovered a vaccine for polio. In 1963, he created an innovative......
