Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Davis did many remarkable things throughout his lifetime. He was born June 3, 1808 in Todd, Kentucky in a double cabin, a cabin with two rooms, on a frontier farm. Davis was the tenth and last child of Jane and Samuel Davis. He was named after the president Thomas Jefferson. Davis was the only child who was not named after someone from the Bible. When he turned three years old, he moved south to Louisiana for a brief period of time. In 1812, the family moved to Mississippi to the last house his father would build. In this year Samuel Davis was fifty-six years old. Davis had the usual amusements of a boy. He hunted and fished; had dogs and rode horses.
His education began when he was seven years old. He went to the school of St. Thomas Aquinas for two years. At age 14, 1821, he headed north to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky for college. Davis spent three years there.
