Everyone born into this world has the ability to do “good”, but we also have a darkness within that tempts us with rushes of adrenaline and sadistic pleasure from committing acts deemed socially/morally wrong or “evil” in some views. Even though a person’s conscience tries and guides them and subdue the influences of their dark satisfactions, everyone eventually will succumb to their dark temptations, and indulge in morally or socially unacceptable acts. Edgar Allan Poe’s book “The Black Cat” opens a window to the inner struggle of the darkness in one’s own heart and how that darkness is a driving force upon one’s mind. Poe’s story portrays the life of a man as he slowly falls further into darkness, where he is unable to escape from the dark temptations of his own mind. Poe uses the two cats of the story as symbols of the man’s dark desires and his once happy past. For he is slowly enveloped, he gives way to the dark pleasures that taunt his mind and begins......
