It’s better to get to know a person before judging them. In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest Gaines, different characters had different opinions about one of the main characters Jefferson. Jefferson, who is black man, who was at the wrong place at the wrong time, is awaiting his execution for killing a white man that he had nothing to do with. The teacher, Grant was told that he had to teach Jefferson how to be a man before he dies, which he really doesn’t want to. Reverend Ambrose thinks that he doesn’t need to be taught how to be a man, but to have God in is life. Sheriff Guidry, a white man, wants to just get everything over with because Miss Emma and Tante Lou were getting his wife in the situation. Many people have their many different thoughts about what going on with Jefferson.

At first, Grant wants nothing to do with what is going on with Jefferson. He thinks it’s useless to teach him anything but he feels that he’s dead already. Grant says,......
