The first African American gangs began forming in the 1920’s. Unlike today’s gangs they were not territorial but unorganized and rarely violent. In the late 1960’s the two most violent gangs were formed. These gangs were the Bloods from Compton, and the Crips from southeastern Los Angeles. By the 1980’s there were about 15,000 gang members in Los Angeles. The members of these gangs are usually from the age of 14-24They began to get involved in neighborhood crimes such as robbery, assault, and the selling of drugs. Today there are an estimated 150,000 gang members in and around Los Angeles. There are members of Crips and Bloods in 100 American Cities. Most of the members in these gangs are teenagers, ranging in age from 12-25. Gang leaders tell teenagers that being in their gang can help them. Teens in gangs will not be helped in any way.
