The Roots of Depression
When looking at the origin of depression there are many factors, which
do not directly cause depression but may trigger it. For example, a
stressful event or period in one's life such as due to death of a
loved one or the loss of one's job may lead to the start of
depression. Other factors could be, medications or withdrawal from
them could help trigger depression e.g. withdrawal from Prozac. Also,
endocrine disorders i.e hormonal problems (hypothyroidism, diabetes);
neurological disorders. All of these are examples of medical or
physiological causes of depression. This therefore means that
biological factors are very important as an explanation for the origin
of depression. However it is not the only explanation, as we can see
there are many triggers that enhance the risk of developing depression
for example environmental factors.
