Maus
An artist has the ability to conjure up a new world that has a life of its own. Artie Spiegelman incorporates Kunstlerroman in his epic tales of Maus I and Maus II, which show an artist’s growth to maturity through the struggles of the author from a turbulent youth (Wikipedia). In this case, Artie is depicting his growth as a result of the physiological suffering from his mother’s death, the tragedy of his deceased brother and his father’s guilt. Nietzsche talks of monumental history and its ability to engulf an individual’s life, which in his case is the effect of the Holocaust on Vladek, Artie’s father (Nietzsche, 9). Vladek’s pain, which comes from remembering tragic and unimaginable events, causes him to feel guilt, which ultimately, he places on Artie.
