The lower four levels of the pyramid are known as the deficiency needs, also known as D-needs. These needs tend to arise due to deprivation. It is important that these needs are satisfied, before a person can experience growth as a person. It they are not met, the body may not give any indication of it physically, but the individual will feel anxious and tense. These deficiency needs are: physiological, safety and security, love and belonging, and esteem. Maslow presents the hierarchy of needs in five different levels in the form of a pyramid, with the most basic needs being at the bottom. These needs are listed in their respective order: physiological needs, security needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualizing needs. Maslow perceives these as the fundamental needs of a person. The second level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs would be a component related to the shelter, safety, and security.
