One of the most difficult tasks investigators have is determining whether a fire was set intentionally or by accident. The reason is fairly basic. The damage from fires destroys or severely impairs most evidence. One of the more unique aspects involved with fire investigation is time frame. Because most accelerants evaporate soon after the fire is out and the area must be cleaned quickly for health reasons, investigators need to begin their examination as soon as possible. This is also one time when it is legally acceptable and common to enter and search a site without first obtaining a search warrant.
The first and foremost task of fire investigators is determining where the fire started. It is the focal point of the investigation, may be significant in ascertaining how it started and whether it was by accident or arson.
