Under the law of HIPAA the patient’s have the right to inspect and obtain a copy of their medical records. The rule excepts from the right of access the following health information: psychotherapy notes, information for legal proceedings, laboratory results which the (CLIA) prohibits access. To obtain health information the patient must provide the health care provider with a written request. Patient’s may also view and obtain copies of medical and billing records and records they use to make health care decisions. The patient has the right to amend their protected health information if inaccurate or incomplete.
