The National Night Out is a unique community event, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, a non-profit crime prevention organization. The National Association of Town Watch works together with crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies, and is dedicated to the development, growth, and maintenance of organized crime and drug prevention programs nationwide. The National Night Out organization provides information, educational materials and technical assistance to coordinators of National Night Out events.
The National Night Out event was first introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch Executive Director, Matt A. Peskin. Mr. Peskin thought that there was a need for a “high-profile, high-impact type of crime prevention event” (The History of NATW and National Night Out, 2006).
