Shield Volcano
Shield volcanoes are formed when a huge amount of free-flowing lava spills from a vent and spreads broadly. The lava slowly builds up a low, broad, dome shaped mountain. The well-known Mauna Loa in Hawaii is a shield volcano. Thousands of detached overlapping lava flows, each less than 15 metres thick formed Mauna Loa. Shield volcanoes are tall and broad, with flat, rounded shapes. They are built up slowly by the merging of thousands of flows of highly fluid basaltic lava that spread widely over great distances, and then cool as thin, gently dipping sheets
Composite volcanoes are formed when both lava and tephra erupt from a central vent. The materials pile up in alternate layers around the vent and form a towering, con-shaped mountain. Composite volcanoes include Mount Fuji in Japan, Mayon Volcano in Philippines, and Vesvius in Italy.
