Fifth-year student Catherine Duane from Holy Faith Secondary School, Clontarf, Dublin has won the top prize in the third annual national science essay competition organised by the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at NUI Galway.
The judges praised Catherine's essay, saying that the writing was crisp and to the point and that she handled the argument with confidence. Catherine won a laptop, a trophy and €500 science bursary for her school.
The runner up was Leaving Cert student Aidan Rowe from St Gerald's College, Castlebar, Co Mayo. According to the judges, Aidan's essay demonstrated a very sophisticated grasp of the science underlying genetic engineering, and his own response to the topic was both original and insightful. Aidan won a video iPod, a trophy and a €250 school science bursary.
