Margo Windler Miss Bierck February 27, 2008 The Salem Witch Trials In 1692, a horrific panic swept through Salem, Massachusetts. This very sad time in our American history should be studied for a variety of reasons. Without a fair and just court system in place, the Salem Witch trials continued to “fuel the hysteria and fear” within the small Puritanvillage. At the time of the witch trials “impulsive accusations”, lack of protection for those accused of witchcraft, and the creation of false evidence conjured up by the judges themselves, all contributed to an unfair and unjust court system. In mid January of 1692, a strange illness struck eleven year old Abigail Williams and her nine year old cousin Betty Parris. The girls would often spend their time curled up in corners ignoring everyone else, shriek and cry as if they were in pain, and their bodies would twist and twitch in awkward positions.
