Marriage

Arranged marriage is declining, but it is still common in many Eastern and Asian countries. Even though arranged marriages are decreasing, it remains very dominant in many countries such as India, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Asia. I am from the Middle East and arranged marriage is still practiced there. My parents were arranged and I learned a lot about how to go about it. I compared arranged marriages to the way westerners go about marriage. For example, if I wanted to get married in the Middle East, I would have to first tell my parents that I am interested in a girl. My parents would than get our family together to pay a visit to the girls’ parents’ house to “ask for her hand.” Traditionally I would sit beside my parents and she would sit beside hers. The parents will then discuss to the girls’ parents what I do, whether or not I can support her and the children we will be having. After our visit, the......
