Jas In the article “The Asshole “ by John Van Mannen, he is saying that The Assholes are not the ordinary citizens nor are they regular criminals. He argues that the term “Assholes” as used by the police is derived from their everyday tasks. By looking at previous research John Van Mannen had realized that most researchers are just observing the police as they are doing their job. The researches have shown that the world is divided into 2 camps “for us and against us”. He has also found that most studies do not provide a clear meaning of the terms used by the police. For ex. “Suspicious” compared to “threatening”. Van Mannen has also found that studies ignore the context in which the interactions take place. After, reviewing past literature, Van Mannen has concluded that 3 types of citizens emerge: suspicious persons, Assholes, and know nothings.
