China's 'Only Child' - Controlling Population Growth
China’s “Only Child Policy” was enacted in 1979 and designed to reduce overall population growth in the nation. The Chinese government hoped to limit families to just one child, in effort to slow the population growth, if not stop it completely. Although the implications of this Policy seemed very straightforward and almost fool proof, the results were and still are devastating in many senses of the word.
If the Policy’s effect was strictly measures in numbers, then arguably, the Policy was a success. It is believed that enforcement of the “Only Child Policy” avoided approximately 400 million births and kept China’s population under tremendous control in a time that would have otherwise continue to experience an explosion in child birth rate and therefore, population.
