The Truth Behind Machiavelli’s Arguments
At the close of the dedicatory letter of The Prince, Machiavelli tells us one will be able to know his true intentions only if the book is “diligently considered and read” (M, 2). Machiavelli requires his audience to read “diligently” despite intending for The Prince to be a straightforward and comprehensible piece of work “not ornamented either with the fullness of extended clauses, or with pompous and magnificent words” (M, 2). With this direction, Machiavelli hints to his audience that he is not simply advising and advocating the rule of princes as the text elucidates, but is also encouraging his audience to look beyond what “seems to be” to discover what “actually is.” Such intention suggests that Machiavelli was at heart a closet republican, speaking not just to princes, but also to the general public.
