One of the major conflicts of the Cold War was the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries had massive quantities of weapons of mass destruction as well as weapons of excellent quality. The two heavyweights battled constantly for supremacy over one another. The focus of this paper will be the arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States. The possession of nuclear weapons, rather than conventional weapons, made the arms race between the two powerful countries greatly intensify.
A few years after World War II, the United States was the first country to gain vast amounts of knowledge about nuclear weapons and even more importantly, the raw materials that were needed to make the weapons. With the first atomic bomb being dropped on Japan in 1945, The United States already had an advantage over the Soviets.
