The Role of Literacy in the Life of Frederick Douglass

Kofi Annan once states, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family." In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass’s first step towards freedom is learning how to read and write. Growing up a slave, Douglass witnesses many incidents of cruelty towards slaves. These incidents though raising doubts in his head did not fully convince him of the villainy of slavery. Learning to read achieves this. He describes the negative and positive effects of literacy on himself and the role literacy plays in his obtaining his freedom.
Douglass begins his education when he is given to his master’s brother. His new mistress has never owned a slave and does not have the typical slaveholder mentality in which slaves are to be treated as possessions and not people.
