Tattoos, More Than Just Art An expository essay By Jennifer Smith Tattoos today are a form of art. Some people will have a tattoo done to express oneself while others get a tattoo to make a statement. Few people know that tattoos date back to at least 5,300 years ago or that tattoos are not always done with an electric machine. Scientist have found that centuries ago tattoos were done for religious or healing purposes, among other reasons, and for that tattoos are more than just art. Tattoo came from the Samoan or Tahitian word tataumeaning to mark or strike. The earliest known tattoo to be discovered was found on the mummified corpse of a 5,200 year-old man known as the Iceman. (Lineberry, 2001). Though there were thought to be many reasons for the tattoos including religious and criminal history a further study of the corpse revealed that the tattoos were for therapeutic or medicinal purposes.
