The movie “Thank You for Smoking” portrays a vivid picture of a spokesperson and lobbyist of tobacco industry, Nick Naylor, who is talented in speaking and good at winning arguments through rhetorical sophistry. When he is asked what motivates him to work for the evil tobacco industry, he says “Everyone's got a mortgage to pay.” However, while more plots are presented in the film, it is not difficult to find out where his real motivation comes from. It is not from the wages he receives or the position he serves (which are defined as hygiene factors according to Frederick Hertzberg), but his desire for recognition (which is called motivator factors by Hertzberg). The evidence that shows Nick’s true motivation can be cited anywhere in the movie.
